Industrial safety and risk posed by hazardous industrial facilities is described in this textbook. The textbook explains methods that are used for assessment and control of industrial risk. Prediction of potential accident scenarios and accident consequences as well as estimation of likelihood of these consequences is analyzed. Methods of quantitative and qualitative risk assessment are explained in detail. The nature and mechanisms of industrial accidents are analyzed. The description of a series of major industrial accidents in fixed facilities and transportation is provided. Information on sources of data, necessary for risk assessment, is presented. The subject of risk assessment is explained mainly through risk minimization. Engineering measures and managerial solutions that are used for risk minimization are described. The textbook has been written in order to provide an introductory text for those university students of engineering and management who will design, build and run hazardous industrial objects as well as carry out hazardous activities in manufacturing and transportation. The textbook will be useful for those safety specialists who have to access risk which is posed by hazardous industrial objects and regulated by European Union Seveso III directive 2003/105/EB. This book can be of interest also to the insurers, who will have to consider the possibility of industrial accidents in facilities run by their clients.
