Logistics is one of the most difficult concepts to define, as it covers a wide range of activities, processes, operations and actions. Logistics is commonly intertwined with other activities (e.g., marketing), forming a very thin line and raising the question “What Is What?”. It must be emphasised that logistics is often seen not only as an activity but also as a system, which covers the movement of materials from the starting (raw material sourcing) to the final (consumer’s) point; it could be also associated with its certain functional areas (e.g., transportation or storage). In this manual, the evolution of logistics is analysed, systematic definitions of logistics are presented and the possible compositions of logistics systems are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the management of material, financial and informational flows, which constitutes the basis of the operation of this system. The present manual examines not only functional areas of logistics activity but also the functional complex of logistics, including the following: logistics of supply and distribution; customer service; and activities of warehousing and transportation. The manual is intended for bachelor and master degree students of management and administration, managers of public administration and business organizations and knowledge management specialists.
