Course International Economics and Geopolitics (with Course Project) (VVEIM22022) annotation

The course examines the peculiarities and structure of the international economy, analyzes the main models, forms and means of international trade, examines the aspects of international labor migration, the importance of the balance of payments and the influence of international economic organizations on global economic processes. The course is linked to geopolitics, which combines elements of political science and geography to assess the causes and political consequences of the unequal geographical distribution of state power. Aspects of currency and investment relations and the impact of international economic policy on the world and national economies are also analyzed.

Aim of course

To provide theoretical knowledge about the development, processes and functioning of the international economy in the field of international trade and geopolitics, and abilities to apply them in the assessment. 

Learning outcomes: Will be able to analyze and evaluate the processes of globalization, geopolitical geography. Will be able to conduct research with international trade, globalization. 

Basic knowledge and skills required to study this course (if applicable): Mathematics. 

Faculty and course volume in credits: A 9-credit course of study for the Master's degree in the Faculty of Business Management.

Course content

List of the Course lecture topics:

Global economy. Globalization: essence, causes, benefits. International economic structure and development trends. Changes in the international division of labor. Work and migration in the context of globalization Fundamentals of modern trade theory. The concept of mercantilism, A. Smith's theories of absolute superiority, D. Ricard's comparative superiority. Hexer-Ohlin model 

Free trade and its benefits. International movement of factors of production. International trade and developing countries. Demand and supply model. Stolper-Samuelson's theorem

Measures to regulate international trade: import and export duties. Import quotas and licenses. Export credits and subsidies. Trade policy measures: protectionism, embargo, dumping. Financial market and trade divisions Foreign exchange markets and various exchange rate regimes. Balance of payments. International Monetary System and Foreign Investment 

The burden of employment regulation and risk in business. Company incorporation and governance structure. Provisions of the Double Taxation Convention. The concept of permanent residence 

Activities of transnational corporations. Development of world organizations and analysis of relevant research and activities of global and international companies 

Geopolitics and political geography: basic theoretical concepts. Geopolitical processes and analysis of geopolitical codes. Fundamentals of geopolitical strategy analysis

The role of the nation state in globalization. The role of business in the global economy 

Modern geopolitics: energy resources and economics, cyberspace, space. Modern school of geopolitics in the USA, Russia, China, Europe

Analysis of the selected financial crisis in the context of globalization and geopolitics 

Development trends of the international economy and discussion of their features 

Delivery of tariff and non-tariff trade restrictions of the selected country 

Discussion of international trade and analysis of examples of international business dispute resolution Presentation of the regulation and risks of the main working conditions in the selected country 

Discussion of examples of double taxation 

Presentation of the selected multinational company and its strategy 

Discussion of geopolitical processes and strategies 

Discussion of the role of the nation state and business in the global economy

Presentation of the selected modern school of geopolitics

Upon completion of the course with a positive assessment, a Certificate of Completion will be issued, which is transferable to any higher education institution. Upon completion of the course module without a final assessment, a certificate of completion of the course is issued.
