Course Biofluid Mechanics (MEBIM17067) annotation
The course is dedicated to familiarizing with the features of biofluids, investigating their differences from other fluids, and analyzing biofluid statics and dynamics. During this course, the blood flow is analyzed and modeled. A great attention is paid
Aim of course
To introduce the concepts of biofluids, their properties and differences from other fluids.
Learning outcomes: Will gain knowledge about up-to-date achievements in biofluid mechanics, will be able to critically evaluate such achievements. Will be able to plan and carry out analytical, modeling and experimental research in the field of biofluid mechanics, to assess critically the obtained results and to formulate the conclusions. Will be able to apply the acquired interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding for solving specific problems in the field of biofluid mechanics.
Faculty and course volume in credits: A 6-credit course of study for the Master's degree in the Faculty of Mechanics.

Introduction. History of biofluid mechanics. Basic concepts and definitions. General knowledge of fluids. Physical quantities and their units of measurement
Fundamentals of fluid mechanics. Description of fluid motion. Newtonian and Non-Newtonian Fluids. Dimensionless numbers in fluid mechanics. Laminar and turbulent flows. Stress tensor. Basic equations of fluid mechanics. Navier-Stokes equation. Steady and pulsatile flow. Two-phase flows
Cardiovascular Physiology. The Heart structure and function. Cardiac valves. Circulatory system mechanics
Vascular structure. Mechanical properties of blood vessels
Hematology and blood rheology. Physiological and mechanical properties of blood. Description of blood models
Cases of blood vessel pathology, their impact on human health and blood flow
Macrocirculation. Blood pressures and pulsatile flow. Arteries and veins. Vascular bifurcations. Blood flow through curved vessels. Blood flow throught stenosis
Microcirculation. Arterioles, capillaries and venules. Mass transportation in tissue. Fluid transportation in poroelastic media
Artificial heart. Types and mechanical properties of blood pumps. Classification, function and haemodynamics of artificial heart valves. Flow patterns in different types of heart valves
Biological fluids of the lungs and kidneys. Airflow in the lungs and gas exchange. Renal blood flow

Upon completion of the course with a positive assessment, a Certificate of Completion will be issued, which is transferable to any higher education institution. Upon completion of the course module without a final assessment, a certificate of completion of the course is issued.
